The Foundation for Melanoma Research was founded in 1999 by Noreen O'Neill, Director of Research and Development at the First Union Center in Philadelphia. Noreen had been diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 1995, and when her disease metastasized a few years later, she looked to volunteer with organizations dedicated to advancing treatments for melanoma patients. Finding none, she decided to build one herself. Calling upon her experience working with charitable institutions and her connection in the business community, Noreen created the Foundation for Melanoma Research. The organization is dedicated to raising awareness about melanoma and funding research into increased prevention, early detection, and new treatments, with the eventual goal of finding a cure. Noreen's vision for FMR was to assemble a Board of Directors consisting of doctors, scientists, and business people who would use their expertise to advance melanoma research. In its first year the Foundation formed a Science Advisory Committee to review research requests and funded the Wallace Clark Lecture series--a one-day seminar held at the University of Pennsylvania to inform scientists on the current state of melanoma research. On July 30, 2000, after a courageous fight against the disease, Noreen lost her life to malignant melanoma. Her death has renewed our commitment to advance melanoma research and treatments in the years to come. |
