THE COMCAST 2000 MURAL Noreen O'Neill had a way of bringing people together and turning her ideas into reality. While working at Comcast in 1999, she had an idea for a mural the company could sponsor for the Republican National Convention, which was coming to Philadelphia in the summer of 2000. She quickly put together a detailed proposal and Dave Watson, Executive Vice-President of Comcast Cable Communications, quickly found himself signing off on it. "Someone like Noreen just makes things special," he says. Noreen then called Jane Golden, Director of the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, with her idea. Jane had been hoping she could get Comcast involved in preparations for the Convention, and was thrilled to get a call from Noreen with the same idea. "It all came about in a magical way." In January 2000, Jane and Noreen went around the city looking for a wall that would be appropriate. They picked the six-story wall facing west at 70 North 17th Street. Michael Webb, the mural artist, took several real-life Philadelphians and weaved them into his vision. Jane describes the mural's theme as "Community people in common pursuit--building a better future." |
